Despite its lightweight good handling, many owners opted for engine swaps, dropping in the 2ZZ-GE found in the Toyota Celica GTS and Corolla XRS that produced 189 HP, so a case could be made that power was an influencing factor in its downfall.

It may not have featured a forced induction option, but as the chief engineer wanted “true driver enjoyment, blending good movement, low inertia, and lightweight”, it featured very sharp handling.
The inline-four 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE engine in the ZZW30 MR2 had variable valve timing and was positioned in the engine bay with the exhaust manifold facing the rear, unlike previous models.

The 6-speed SMT gearbox was much slower than the manual version, taking 8.7 seconds to go 0-60, but despite the manual having less horsepower than the naturally aspirated MKII MR2, it managed to launch in a much more respectable 6.8 seconds. As it was not available in a performance version or with the option for forced induction, its maximum power output of 138 HP and 126 lb-ft of torque was a significant drop, but as it shed almost 700 lbs from one of the previous MKII iterations, it was relatively quick. Unlike the first and second-generation MR2, the third generation was only available in a single-engine option, and on paper, it was a significant step down from the previous two generations.
